Canal Museum Amsterdam tells the story of the Amsterdam canals: about then, now and in the future. The history of the Amsterdam canals is told in an accessible way to reach and inspire as many people as possible.


Foundation Het Grachtenhuis is a non-profit organization and serves the public interest. The foundation’s aim is to convey the history of the Amsterdam canal ring (UNESCO: Seventeenth-Century Canal Ring Area of Amsterdam inside the Singelgracht) to a broad public. This aim is realized via the existence, maintenance and exploitation of the museum: ‘Museum of the Canals’.



Since 2017 the foundation is committed to improve and intensify collaborations with other museums in Amsterdam, as well as with various parties in the tourist industry. The intention of these collaboration is to increase the acquisition and processing of visitors.


ANBI, Cultural Governance Code and annual reports

The Museum of the Canals is per 01-01-2012 appointed as Algemeen Nut Beogende Instelling (ANBI, English: Public Benefit Organisation). The museum agrees to and accepts the Cultural Governance Code. The cultural ANBI-status gives a donator the opportunity to apply the benefits of the gift law.

Museum of the Canals is registered with the Belastingdienst as Stichting het Grachtenhuis.

The board of Foundation Het Grachtenhuis

The Museum of the Canals is governed by the management, consisting of a chief executive officer. The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the entire operational management.

The Foundation functions with a Board of Directors. The board has a supervising and advisory role, monitoring the policymaking of the management and the general organization of the foundation and the museum.

Remuneration policy

The Board of Directors of Foundation Het Grachtenhuis do not receive remuneration for their activities. The remuneration of the chief executive officer and other staff is in line with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch museums and its according salary scales (Museum CAO 2018/2020), without the CAO being applicable to Foundation Het Grachtenhuis.
