GrachtenmuseumExtra is committed to social initiatives

As a museum we contribute to social initiatives. Think of activities for children who grow up in poverty, the greenery and cleaning of the Herengracht, the wheelchair-friendly character of our museum and supporting cultural initiatives that we think are important.

Wheelchair friendliness
and accessibility

There are few museums on the canals as accessible as the Museum of the Canals. We are therefore proud that we have a wheelchair-friendly character thanks to the extra effort of our employees and the facilities in our museum. Together with experience expert Eline from The Spoonies Community and our partner Able Amsterdam, we are constantly working on improving our accessibility.

Read Eline’s blog post about her experience in the Museum of the Canals here. She can also be seen here in the photo.

Activities for children growing up in poverty

School classes and families visit us throughout the year. Our permanent exhibition is created in such a way that it also appeals to children. Unfortunately, there are many families and children who live in poverty. We organize fun activities for these families. For example, we’ll go looking for Easter eggs in the garden in April and Spooking in the Canal House during Halloween. Furthermore, we work together with foundations that are committed to these children.

De Groene Bocht

The ‘Green Bend’ is an initiative of local residents that we wholeheartedly support and to which we commit specially. The goal is to turn ‘our piece’ of the Herengracht into the Green Bend. Together with residents and institutions, we ensure a clean and green bend in the Herengracht. Our museum staff cleans the street and takes care of the green spaces in the driplines of the trees. Rederij Lampedusa

Rederij Lampedusa is an Amsterdam initiative that offers canal cruises in real used refugee boats, given by former refugees. After a successful pilot during the Museum Night, we decided to put in some extra effort and to offer cruises from the Grachtenmuseum for those interested. A canal cruise with Rederij Lampedusa is a very special and penetrating experience that broadens your horizon.

Partners

For our GrachtenmuseumExtra program we work together with partners. These partners support us financially or in a practical sense. With their support, we can realize these initiatives selflessly. If you also want to contribute and become a partner, please contact us at: mail@grachten.museum.
