Craftsmanship

Robin Kapitein is an artist who has given the traditional craft of stained glass a new life. His work shows typical Amsterdam features, but also includes influences from hip-hop and street culture. Especially for this exhibition in the Red Salon of the museum, Robin has created new work in his own style. He uses the canals of Amsterdam and other well-known Amsterdam icons as inspiration.

Kapitein: “As a painter, I mainly worked on houses along the canals, where I often came across stained glass. I always had to be very careful with it, and that is how stained glass became something special to me. I started learning more about the craft, but wanted to give it a more modern look. I get inspiration from the city, its culture, nature and people. This results in modern designs with bright colours and strong, dark lines. What started as a hobby during the pandemic eventually became my work. I am very proud to now be showing my latest work at the Grachtenmuseum.”
