Social initiatives

GrachtenmuseumExtra promotes social initiatives

As a museum about the city, we are also at the heart of the city and urban life. That is why we are pleased to contribute to various social initiatives through GrachtenmuseumExtra. For example, we help keep the Herengracht green and clean and support activities for low-income families. Within the museum itself, we continue to work on the accessibility of our building, including further improving its wheelchair-friendly character. In addition, we support cultural initiatives that are close to our hearts. Would you like to help too? Please visit grachten.museum/steun-ons/.

Museum of the Canals Wheelchair Accessibility

Wheelchair accessibility and inclusion

Few canal-side museums are as accessible as the Museum of the Canals. We are proud of that. Thanks to the extra efforts of our staff and the facilities in our museum, our building has a wheelchair-friendly character. Together with expert by experience Eline from The Spoonies Community and our partner Able Amsterdam, we are constantly working to improve our accessibility.

More activities for underprivileged children

Our permanent exhibition is very appealing to children. That is why we regularly welcome school classes and families. Unfortunately, there are also many families and children who have to get by on very little money. It is precisely for them that we organize GrachtenmuseumExtra activities in collaboration with various foundations. In the past, for example, there were Easter egg hunts in the garden, and during Halloween, we organized 'Spooky times at the Canal House'.

De Groene Bocht

De Groene Bocht (The Green Bend) is a local initiative by neighborhood residents that we wholeheartedly support and commit to through GrachtenmuseumExtra. The goal is to turn our section of the Herengracht into the 'Groene Bocht'. Together with residents and institutions, we are working towards a clean and green bend in the Herengracht. Museum staff keep the street clean and will soon also maintain the green areas to be created in the tree mirrors.

Rederij Lampedusa

Lampedusa is an Amsterdam initiative that offers canal cruises in boats formerly used by refugees. The guides are also former refugees. During the canal tour, they provide an extra perspective with stories about Amsterdam as a city of immigrants. After a successful pilot during Museum Night, we are also supporting Rederij Lampedusa through GrachtenmuseumExtra and offering canal cruises from the Museum of the Canals. A special and poignant experience that broadens your perspective.
