{"id":1818,"date":"2026-09-17T09:33:35","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T09:33:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grachten.museum\/programma\/amsterdam-day-and-night\/"},"modified":"2026-09-22T07:59:18","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T07:59:18","slug":"amsterdam-day-and-night","status":"publish","type":"tentoonstelling","link":"https:\/\/grachten.museum\/en\/programma\/amsterdam-day-and-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Amsterdam, day and night"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Arie Schippers (1952)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schippers enjoyed his education at the Rotterdam Academy and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (State Academy of Visual Arts) in Amsterdam. In 1977 he won the Prix de Rome for painting and in 2016 he was awarded the Sacha Tanja Penning. He is also a sculptor and his works include Long Walk to Freedom (2012), the monument to Nelson Mandela in The Hague.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, Arie Schippers drove through Amsterdam in his minivan and painted hundreds of cityscapes, most of them in the suburbs and on the edges of the city, and a few in the centre. \u2018The city centre belongs to Breitner,\u2019 he says. \u2018And in the centre, you can&#8217;t just park your van wherever you want.\u2019   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schippers has a generous eye by nature who paints everything he can see: an invalid cart, containers, logos on buildings, strangely parked lorries, bottle banks, bus shelters and billboard advertisements of cars as big as the cars parked next to them; it all gets included. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tim Killiam Prize<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tim Killiam Prize is an initiative of the Tim Killiam Foundation, the foundation responsible for managing the estate of architect, draftsman and photographer Tim Killiam (1947-2014). Among many other things, Killiam was the creator and publisher of the Amsterdam Canal Guide. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tim Killiam Prize is intended for creators who make an original or valuable contribution to the image of the city of Amsterdam.
