The canals of Amsterdam constitute the heart of the city and have a layered and fascinating history. At the Museum of the Canals, you can explore these exciting stories in our multimedia exhibition.
How did Amsterdam transform from a small fishing port into a metropolis? What were the canals created for in the first place? And why do they remain of central importance to the city to this day? You’ll learn all of this in our compelling audiovisual exhibition, which takes you on a journey through 400 years of Amsterdam’s history.
Our audiovisual exhibition comes with a free audioguide, which is available in eight languages. After visiting the exhibition, you are free to take a tour through the temporary exhibition or to partake in the many activities that the museum organizes. Our museum is accessible to wheelchair users.
